Qaanaaq (Thule) along Pituffik and other communities in this area are located in the western most region of Greenland. This part of Greenland is located in the Atlantic Time zone and are UTC/GMT -4 hours during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT -3 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). Qaanaaq (Thule) follows the same rules as North America for when daylight saving time begins and ends. Most parts of Greenland, including Nuuk the capital of Greenland, are UTC/GMT -3 hours during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT -2 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). The towns and villages using this time are located in the Central Greenland Time zone. Follows the same rules as the EU for when daylight saving time begins and ends. A small area on the eastern coast of Greenland, located approximately between 70º north and 75º north, which includes Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund) is UTC/GMT -1 hour during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT 0 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). These towns and villages are located in the Eastern Greenland Time zone. Follows the same rules as the EU for when daylight saving time begins and ends. Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur use the same time as Greenwich Meantime and do not observe daylight saving time (summer time). As a result, both Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur are UTC/GMT 0 hours all year. Although there are 4 time zones, for all intents and purposes, only three time zones are used. The time zone which is located in Greenwich Meantime (Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur) is a small and isolated area above 75º north and lower than 78º north on the eastern coast of Greenland. In this time zone you will find the National Park I Nørdgrønland Øg Østgrønlar and seismology stations operated by Denmark. Due to its remote and virtually uninhabited location, this time zone is seldom used. Greenland is the world’s largest island. Greenland is about 81% ice–capped. Vikings reached the island in the 10th century from Iceland. Danish colonization began in the 18th century and Greenland was made an integral part of Denmark in 1953. It joined the European Community (now the European Union) with Denmark in 1973 but withdrew in 1985 over a dispute over stringent fishing quotas. Greenland was granted self–government in 1979 by the Danish parliament. The law went into effect the following year. Denmark continues to exercise control of Greenland’s foreign affairs.
